The state has banned an area towing company from doing further business in Joplin in the aftermath of the devastating May 22 tornado.
Attorney General Chris Koster got a temporary restraining order against Independence Tow & Recovery Inc., and Koster’s office said the company violated the state’s Merchandising Practices Act after the tornado. Koster’s office says the company towed semi-tractors and trailers damaged in the storm, sometimes without the owners’ approval, and demanded “considerably more than the fair market price.”
The order prohibits Independence Tow & Recovery from doing business in Joplin and from disposing of or moving any of the vehicles without the owners’ written permission. The company also is ordered to keep documents related to the towing.
