Blue Springs, MO —

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a Blue Springs Police Officer, or what the training involved might be like? Are you willing to invest a little time to help build the partnership between BSPD and our community? This is your chance!

The Blue Springs Police Department is proud to announce it will host its first Citizen’s Police Academy beginning Wednesday, Sept. 10th, 2008. This is an excellent opportunity for residents of Blue Springs to learn first hand some of the realities of police work and get to know BSPD personnel one-on-one!

Most classes will be conducted on Wednesday nights for nine weeks in the classroom of the Community and Youth Outreach Unit, 205 S.W. 11th St. next door to the police station. Class times will be from 6 to 9 p.m. each night and will include training on the history of law enforcement, crime scene investigation, bike patrol, K-9 and STAT (also known as SWAT) operations, constitutional and courtroom issues.

The Blue Springs Police Department academy is a “hands-on” citizen academy, where participants will be involved in various simulated situations including processing crime scenes, conducting car stops, and performing building searches.

Participants will have the opportunity to be involved in firearms training at the firing range and the Fire Arms Training System at the Western Missouri Regional Police Academy. FATS is simulated situational that is really enlightening.

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to complete a patrol ride along session with a Blue Springs uniformed patrol officer on the streets of Blue Springs.

The training will be conducted by experienced members of the Blue Springs Police Department. Remember - don’t plan on just sitting in a class room, as participants will be actively involved in scenarios to get a feel for what it may really be like to confront a subject who is committing a crime.

To enroll in the Blue Springs Police Department Citizen Police Academy or to ask any questions please contact Sgt. Allen Kintz, Crime Prevention Supervisor at 816-228-0178 or send an e-mail directly to the police department at police@bluespringsgov.com. A background check is completed prior to enrollment in the program to ensure the safety of participants.
