Lee's Summit, MO —

To the editor:

Parking for handicapped individuals is out of control at Independence Center. This parking is being abused primarily by young people who are using their parents’ or grandparents’ parking cards, or hiding the absence of a card using a sun screen on the windshield. I would like to suggest the following remedies:

1. Place penalty signs (similar to those on the handicapped signs at Centerpoint Medical Center) with the handicapped signs, showing the fines for a violation of the privilege. This may get some potential abusers to not take a space.

2. More frequent monitoring by the security guards at the Center, with police tickets written on the first offense.

3. If feasible, monitor the handicapped parking slots with a video camera, displaying at the information desk, with a security guard called to check out obvious scofflaws.

These steps would be a blessing to those who truly need to park close because of medical difficulties.
