Independence, MO —

To the editor:

Candidates tell only part of story.

When deciding which candidate to vote for, the voters must sort through the spin, half-truths and what’s not being said. Each candidate has a “plan” to solve what’s wrong with our country and what changes they will make. It is not possible to discuss all the positions each presidential candidate says they will solve, so I will discuss Social Security change.

One candidate says he will tax the employee up to $102,000 (current), and then start taxing salary again at $250,000. This will result in a doughnut hole from $102,000 to $250,000. It is interesting to note that the salaries of senators and representatives are $169,000.

This position results in those voting for Social Security change to not be taxed, nor will their benefits be reduced. The presidential candidate is silent concerning how these same senators and representatives will spend this Social Security money. It is common knowledge that members of Congress have spent all the Society Security money and it has been replaced with IOUs. The change being proposed for the Social Security system is to increase taxes, but not increase taxes for the members of Congress. The money being collected does not have to be spent on Social Security benefits and can be spent on congressmen’s favorite projects or earmarks.
