Independence, MO —

To the editor:
One of the noteworthy features of the Extreme School Makeover was the freedom given Lori Smith and her team in organizing and directing this great community endeavor. Evidently, our fine school superintendent, Dr. Jim Hinson, who of course was involved in the process of picking a winner and giving her freedom to act, did so without fear that her success might undermine his image.
In the final analyses, her success reflected great credit to Dr. Hinson and his administration.
I write partly because I have seen too many leaders push aside co-workers whose attainments they fear might overshadow theirs, with resulting harm done to the success of their own programs. Fortunately may I add, for our city, Mayor Don Reimal has that same gift of humility, which permits him to lift up successful volunteers or co-workers on his team without fear of their harming his role as mayor. Again, that is one of the reasons our community is also blessed with a fine city administration.
Our congratulations to both. May many more follow their examples.
