To the editor:
Thomas Ultican Elementary School held an assembly for teacher’s appreciation week last Friday. David Cook made a surprise appearance during the assembly. Three out of the four lunch ladies were told they had to leave the premises prior to the David Cook appearance. We were the only staff members told to leave. We took it very personally and felt we were discriminated against, whereas PTA members, school board members and their families were able to attend.
By no means are we attempting any disrespect toward David Cook. We, the lunch ladies at Thomas Ultican, have been, and still are, his biggest fans. We were proud to say we worked at the school and just wanted to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience for Blue Springs. We understand it was primarily for the children who attend our school, and that one special music teacher who is still teaching music, and we are very happy for them. We can’t speak for David Cook, but from what we hear, he is a very kind man and would be the type of person who would be disappointed in the decision that the principal, vice principal and lunch room manager made.
We, the lunch ladies, just want an explanation on why we were told we had to leave.
