Independence, MO —

To the editor:

I want to commend officer Rob Romey on the terrific job he is doing since taking over as leader of the Neighborhood Watch program in Independence.

Now, I have only been involved with the Neighborhood Watch in my neighborhood for about three years. About two years ago, I decided to attend several of the once-per-month citywide Neighborhood Watch meetings. But I was discouraged by I saw and heard. The leader seemed unprepared and unmotivated. It looked like the Independence Police were not taking the Neighborhood Watch program very seriously.

Since Officer Romey has taken charge, I’ve been able to attend two meetings. I was very impressed by what I saw and heard. His information regarding the logic behind calling 9-1-1 in order to empower the police to investigate was clear, and it did actually teach me something. His PowerPoint presentation, with its “what if” examples/problems for the audience to participate in was well-done.

The audience, most of whom seemed to be regular attendees, seemed to have a good rapport with Officer Romey.

The fact that he made his entire PowerPoint presentation available to folks as both a paper handout – and as a video tape of the presentation – really impressed me. It showed thoughtfulness and preparation.

I feel like the Neighborhood Watch Program has made a “180-degree turn.” From here on out, I plan on attending these citywide meetings whenever I can.

I just wanted to say “thank you” to Officer Romey! And I’d like to commend the Independence Police Department for making a “turn-around” with this program!
