Independence, MO —

To the editor:

Barack Obama’s speech about patriotism at the Truman Memorial Building has raised the bar for every American. He has called out to everyday citizens by asking them to repair our government’s weakness and injustice.

I believe Obama’s premise validates my efforts for reform of local government. I have challenged Jackson County to become a more transparent government, but I see that it continues to hide behind a shield of local ordinances and wall of lawyers paid with public funds. Obama counsels courage to citizens who choose freedom and liberation from oppression.

Our country is strong due to insurrection, not as consequence of anarchy. A patriot is someone who petitions his government to raise it up and fulfill the promise to serve the will people. We cannot allow our governments to create self-serving laws and discriminate against our constitutional freedoms.
