Artist reception tonight for Square’s Third Friday
Third Fridays at Primary Colors Gallery will feature Kale Van Leeuwen, with an opening reception from 6 to 9 tonight at the Gallery, 109 W. Lexington Ave., Independence. Van Leeuwen’s work will be shown until Oct. 23.
Van Leeuwen stated in a press release: “Subtlety has never been my strong point. I create work that is vivid, bold and eye-catching. One consistent thread in all of my work is the use of light and reflections. Whether the subject matter is a mannequin, chairs, marbles or a ceramic horse, the lighting is always a key part of the painting. I also have a great desire for color; the brighter the better. I like the vibrancy of the saturated color next to the deep black shades.”
For more information, call the Gallery at 816-254-2106.

Fire, water spectacle returns to Plaza
WaterFire Kansas City, the multi-sensory spectacle of music, fire and water, will return to Brush Creek Oct. 24. This free event begins at dusk and runs until midnight.
Stretching from Pennsylvania Avenue to J.C. Nichols Parkway, the award-winning art installation features 55 floating bonfires that crackle and burn on the creek’s surface, creating a firelight that illuminates the surrounding landscape of the Country Club Plaza. Sidewalk performers, fire dancers and continuous music add to the atmosphere.
This year’s presentation features performances by Vesuvius Fire Tribe, Quixotic Performance Fusion and some of the area’s most talented vocalists. Food will be available for purchase from four Plaza restaurants. For more information, go to VisitKC.com/WaterFire or call 816-221-5242.
