Put together a fairy godmother, a stepmother, two stepsisters, a prince looking for true love and a young servant girl and what is the result – Grain Valley High School’s fall production of “Cinderella.”
“The kids have done great,” said director Athena Meinicki of the fall theater production. “It really has been like a fairytale working with them.”
“Cinderella” is based on the fairytale of the same name by Charles Perrault. The musical was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein specifically for television, the only one of the famous duos’ musicals to do so.
Much like the Walt Disney movie, the musical version of “Cinderella” focuses on the title character who has been forced into servitude by her stepmother and two stepsisters. But it is at a ball where she loses her glass slipper and finds her true love, Prince Charming.
“Cinderella” is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Grain Valley High School, 551 S.W. Eagles Parkway. Admission is $5 for students, $7 for adults and $20 for a family pack.
“This is definitely a diverse group of students, so I think simply organizing the rehearsal schedule has been the biggest challenge,” Meinicki said. “But I have truly been lucky to work with this group. They are ready for the curtain to go up on opening night.”
In her first high school theater production, freshman Sydni Cummings is playing one of the townspeople. She said she has been to numerous high school productions over the last few years and was eager to be a part of one this fall.
“It is just so much fun being up there on stage,” she said. “I think my favorite songs are the ones with the King and the Queen. They are just so adorable in those songs, in love and full of life.”
Senior Emily Pahmeyer plays the Fairy Godmother, one of the most recognizable characters in the production. She said she has had so much fun playing the role, but one of her favorite parts has been wearing the pink, sparkly dress with the matching tiara.
“It is just a lot of fun, and I get to do some cool special effects,” she said. “I think this is just a fun musical, and I love performing. I hope the audience simply has a good time and enjoys all of the humor, comedy and of course, the music. We have all had so much fun putting this together, and I hope that come through on stage.”
