Hannah Hausmann gives her middle school social studies students a five-minute update each Monday on her wedding planning endeavors.
After that, her students aren’t allowed all week to ask any more questions about Hausmann’s upcoming September wedding.
But following Hausmann’s experiences this past weekend, she may have needed more than five minutes on Monday.
Hausmann of Lee’s Summit was one of more than 300 attendees at The Examiner’s annual Bridal Expo on Saturday at The Pavilion at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit. The day included a morning and an afternoon fashion show, as well as vendor displays for venues, food, bridal wear, photography and other wedding planning-related details.
The 26-year-old bride-to-be was joined by two women who have more than 60 years of combined marriage experience: her mother, Judi Hausmann, married for 29 years, and the mother of her fiancé, Brenda Lipps, who has been married 33 years.
In the little more than a month since her Jan. 21 engagement to Adam Lipps, Hannah Hausmann has set a date for their wedding (Sept. 2), selected a venue and even bought a wedding dress.
Hausmann is still seeking ideas, though, which led her to attend the expo. Catering and tuxedos, she said, were the top details she wants to finalize next. At the expo, Hausmann said she saw a tuxedo design she loved, as well as good ideas for food to serve at her reception.
“It’s been a lot of fun to taste different foods,” she said, “because the catering part was a little overwhelming.”
Wedding planning has changed significantly in the three decades since Judi Hausmann and Brenda Lipps walked down the aisle, both women said, laughing.
“There was nothing like this – no bridal fairs. It was just pretty much that you looked in a magazine, picked out what you liked and hoped you could find something close,” Brenda Lipps said. “I would have loved something like this.”
Judi Hausmann remembered her August 1982 wedding as a simple day with a cake-and-punch reception in the same building as the ceremony. She laughed when remembering that the “innovative thing” at that time was to throw bird seed at the bride and groom instead of rice.
“It’s a gala, an extravagant event now,” Judi Hausmann said.
As for Hannah Hausmann’s special day, she wants something simple and “low stress” since she’s been in many weddings herself, including serving in the role of maid of honor.
“I’ve never really thought about my wedding before,” she said, “so I’m kind of making it up as I go.”
