An interesting thing happened to me yesterday. As I drove through my favorite fast food chain, (that’s not really a place I should be eating from) the money-taking girl saw a box of business cards in my front seat, and, in a moment of fast-food worker brilliance, asked if I worked at a hair salon.
I said yes, and she proceeded to tell me her bad haircolor problem. While I was tempted to reach into my adorable orange handbag and pull out my Wonder Woman/ Haircolorist cape and offer advise to this nice young lady, there was quite a line forming behind me of dollar menu hungry people. So, for fear of being run over, I passed on the opportunity.
But the entire moment reminded me that for whatever reason, there are many people out there trying to do kitchen color. This, undoubtedly, will many times end in a color that is wrong, if not the first time then at sometime down the road.
In the very least, box color tends to get too dull and dry as it is applied over and over again. So while I completely understand that salon visits can be costly, I want to plead with all of you kitchen colorist to do one of two things.
n Stop what you are doing and seek professional help within your favorite salon, or
n Stop coloring your own hair altogether.
Bad hair color that is growing out without a plan is probably one of the of the most unflattering looks for anyone, so just consider not coloring your hair if the cost prohibits you.
Another style phenomenon I am reminded of, is that people are still very much uninformed about how hair color works, what it will do to hair and the sometimes consequence of over coloring. Let alone our young kitchen colorists (teenagers) that are are color fearless. Education is the key here.
So, with that said, I implore you to ask more questions of your colorist about the process, call a salon and ask if they offer color consultation or email us and we will try to offer as much help as possible. Your questions and and answers might even show up in a column!
Remember knowledge is power. Let’s have a great conversation about haircolor this fall.
Just remember, I can answer general questions. Specific color questions about your formula, will most likely require a consultation with your colorist, there are too many variables in play.
Have a beautiful day!
