It seems as though every time I write a column about gray hair, I am usually writing about covering the stuff up. Today, I wish to offer a different type of tip for those of you with gray hair, who do not want to cover it up or camouflage it.
Contrary to popular belief, I am not totally against gray or white hair. As a matter of fact, I do have several clients who have an incredible style that includes the silvery stands.
One of the biggest complaints I hear about gray hair is that it is not as shiny as other hair. This is due to a possibility that the newly gray hair could be coarser that the other hairs and won’t reflect shine like smoother stands would. As well, as we get older our hair loses a lot of its shine and natural oils.
Health plays a big part in how our hair looks, so watch what you eat, choosing a diet that provides your hair the protein and vitamins it needs to stay healthy. Vitamin B is a great vitamin for your hair.
There are also shampoos and conditioners that help to keep gray hair looking its best. When it comes to keeping gray hair clean, it is usually best to select products that are specifically designed for this hair color and type. This is because hair that has lost its pigmentation tends to dry out and become damaged more easily than other hair. It is also a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo on your hair every week or so to cleanse your tresses of buildup that is caused by the use of shampoos, conditioners and styling products. Conditioners are an important part of gray hair care, and a deep conditioning should be done every week or two as well. For maximum moisturizing, try an in-salon treatment.
Another problem that can work its way onto gray or white hair is yellowing. This can be the result of environmental factors like pollution or cigarette smoke. While your original hair color might have been able to successfully mask this yellowing, gray hair cannot. The use a clarifying shampoo for a deep cleaning will help to minimize this yellowing. Don’t forget to ask your stylist for help in keeping your gray tresses, they will know how to best advise you.
Finally, since gray hair has a tendency to make the skin look dull, it is important to keep a bit of color in your complexion. Try using a moisturizing foundations that will give your skin a natural glow. For your eye makeup, avoid dark blue, gray and silver shadows that might give you an icy look. Go for contrasting colors that will brighten your look like pink and lavender. Use pink or coral shades on cheeks and keep lips lips luscious with lipsticks or glosses that will complement your blush you have chosen.
I really hope these ideas work for you. Give it a try and have a beautiful day.
