Let's Try Healthy

This past week I heard something that really threw me for a loop.  I thought I had pretty much heard it all from Grouchy Bear in his attempts to get his way regarding his desire for unhealthy foods — but this one took the cake.

He told me that the reason he needed biscuits and gravy more often was that his body was craving it and that when you begin to crave special items it is a sign that your body needs it.

Oh, my goodness, give me a break.

The attempt did not work and he did not get the biscuits and gravy and he has been a real pain since then. This will make readers realize just how far he will go to get his “illegal” food items.

The heat has truly changed our way of eating in the past few weeks. This has been almost unbelievable to everyone.

The use of ovens and burners makes the kitchen unbearable and so we have had sandwiches and salads more often than normal.

With our air conditioner working overtime we are using our microwave much more.

Microwaving bacon keeps the heat down, and gardens are producing lots of tomatoes so these sandwiches are often on the menu.

Slicing open hotdogs, placing small pieces of cheese in the openings and then wrapping bacon around the dogs and microwaving them until they are warm and the bacon is done are good also.

Our friends Kay and Bob Morris told us of a drink she has mixed up for their home. She uses a large bottle of the sugar free blueberry juice, pours it into a pitcher and adds a can of frozen lemonade.

Fruit salads are refreshing, healthy and so quickly made (without any heat) that we have had those several times.

Cantaloupe, watermelon, pineapple, blueberries or any type of fruit are wonderful mixed together.

If you want a little sweetener add some Splenda and mix well. Keep the fruit covered in the fridge and dish it up as you desire. Adding a bit of whipped topping can spice it up also.

One parfait glass for each person can be filled with layers of blueberries, strawberries, banana, kiwi, grapes, etc. Mix up a large package of sugar-free banana pudding (mixed with a cup of vanilla yogurt) and pour over the fruit.

We have had this in our articles before, but it is wonderful any time and especially great when you want good, simple things without turning on the cooking elements.

Use your microwave as much as possible by making omelets and serving these with toast, cottage cheese, tomatoes or other side dishes.

When you add minced onion, salt and pepper, cheese and chopped tomato and microwave you have a quick meal.

Actually all this is healthy food that is great for keeping our kitchens cool is not only healthy but probably will help each of to drop a few pounds so it is a double bonus.

Hoping for some cool air to come in and for each of you to have a great week. See you next week.
