Summertime is always a great time to have a little fun with your hair color. It seems that we get so many requests for highlights during the warmer months.
But clients will often book an appointment for color when they actually want highlights. This can cause a bit of a clog in the day or result in a disappointed guest when there is not enough time booked out for a highlighting service.
So I thought it would be helpful to offer some information about highlights and color that might make things a little clearer. It should help you communicate with your stylist better, and it just might answer a few questions for those of you that are thinking about adding a color service to your next salon visit. Here are a few things to remember when you are booking your appointment.
-
Highlights always take pigment from your own hair and sometimes deposit tone after. Highlights are permanent, so they will only grow out, not fade away. They can be any color but will always be lighter than your hair color.
-
You can have highlights added to your hair using bleach or color, and there are many applications that go with that. There is foil, paper highlighting, cap highlighting, baliage and a whole bunch more
- Lowlights are darker than your hair color and can be permanent or semi permanent. They are applied the same ways highlights can be applied. Some processes will need to be toned as well.
- Full foil highlights (or lowlights) in general take longer to do than a cap process or a partial foil, so make sure you let the person booking your service know exactly what you want. They in turn might ask you if you what a full or partial highlight. The difference again involves timing and also whether you get all your hair highlighted or just the top.
If you don’t know what you want, ask for a brief consultation with your favorite stylist before you book, or check with them during you current visit before you make your next color appointment. This will clear it all up. The addition of color to your hair can be fun and very flattering, so give it a whirl. Have a beautiful day!
