Hello my friends! My name is Shorty. I am wearing this sombrero in preparation of the annual Animals Best Friends Chili Supper and Bingo night this coming Saturday. This event has become an annual ritual for many who partake of Linda Humphrey’s famous chili, then play bingo until they drop.
This chili supper will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 611 N. Liberty St., Independence. Serving time is 6 p.m. Participants will receive a bowl of delicious chili, a drink, and dessert along with one bingo card for only $7. There will be raffle tickets and additional Bingo cards available for $1 each.
Bingo starts at 7 p.m., and then the real fiesta begins. There will be lots of great prizes for bingo and raffle winners. Everyone enjoys this annual event, which is a real treat for the entire family.
How do I benefit from this fiesta? I am one of the several homeless animals who live at the ABF facility. These fundraisers help provide a roof over my head and food for me to eat until I can find a home of my own. My ABF brothers and sisters and I are very grateful for all the support we receive from the community.
My story is a short and sad one. I was given up by my guardian when I was 5 years old. ABF volunteers felt sorry for me and rescued me. Today, I am 7 years old. My breed is mixed, but I am regal in spirit. I am short in stature, but I stand proud among my brethren as I am known as “the short man.” I can walk on a lead with the best of them, and I am housebroken. My only downfall is cats. I cannot be around them, I will say no more. I am very lovable and would make a great companion if only someone would give me the chance.
Please come to our fiesta Saturday night. Indulge in the mouthwatering chili and desserts then play Bingo and win many prizes. You’ll have a great time and it is for a great cause.
ABF 2010 Calendars and “Save a Life Adopt a Shelter Pet” shirts will be for sale at the chili supper this Saturday. ABF Calendars are $10 and the shirts are $8 each. There will also be a donation barrel for anyone who wishes to bring something from our wish list for the ABF kids: dog chow, dog biscuits, rawhides, cow hooves, canned dog and cat food, laundry soap, bleach, Fantastic cleaning spray, paper towels and newspapers. There is a paper recycling bin in the parking lot at ABF Headquarters, 2302 S. Crysler Ave., Independence. Please, no cardboard or telephone books. We appreciate your support.
