Mister’s will to survive a horrid condition as a puppy now gives him the strength to face his next task. He is a 2 1/2-year old, 78 pound, Lab/boxer mix. He was diagnosed with bilateral anterior cruciate ligament tears.
A common sports injury in human knees is even more common in dogs. Each year, more than 1 million dogs suffer from cranial cruciate ligament deficiency, which is comparable to the ACL injury in humans. The common method of treatment by many veterinary surgeons involves cutting the tibia bone to stabilize the CCL-deficient knee in these dogs. Mister will be undergoing this surgery. He will be at the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Clinic in Overland Park, under the care of Dr. Dudley. His first surgery was on Nov. 3. The second surgery will be scheduled after his first leg heals.
Mister has been in the care of his foster mom since he was 6 weeks old. Prior to rescue, kept outside in a small wire crate, Mister was malnourished with every bone showing. He now has his own room set up for him with lots of dog beds. He is known as “the couch potato” in his home! He has a very pleasing personality, enjoys lying around, and licking the face of anyone that meets him. Maybe after his double surgery, he will be more active.
Joanne Vaughn, budget and finance chairperson, said, “I can think of no better way to spend ABF’s money than with cases like his.”
