Christ United appoints
Reverend Williams

Christ United Methodist Church is happy to announce the appointment of Rev. Chris Williams at its new pastor.
Rev. Williams comes to us from Manchester United Methodist Church near St. Louis, Mo. He graduated from St. Paul’s School of Theology and served at Fairmount United Methodist while going to school. He has served as associate pastor at Belton and served as associate pastor, working with the contemporary service and other areas at Manchester United Methodist for several years.
Christ UMC is happy to have Chris, his wife and four children as part of our church family.
The church is located at 14506 E. 39th St., Independence.

Enjoy good barbecue
and a garage sale

Boy Scouts Troop 1 is having a barbecue and garage sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Community of Christ Church, 3371 Blue Ridge Blvd., Independence.
The cost will vary, but will start at $5 a plate. Proceeds will be used to send the boys to camp. For more information, call 816-507-2324.

New Liberty Baptist
celebrating 150 years

New Liberty Baptist Church will be celebrating its 150th anniversary Saturday with festivities, including dinner at 5 p.m., followed by a concert with Bud and Barbara Lee.
On Sunday, the service begins with Bible study at 9:30 a.m., and worship at 10:45 a.m.

Spaghetti dinner today
from noon to 2 p.m.

Boy Scout Troop and Cub Pack 229 will be holding a spaghetti dinner from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall at the First Christian Church, 125 S. Pleasant St., Independence.
The dinner includes a beverage, salad and all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $5 for adults, $3 for children 3 to 10, and  free for children under 3 years old. Proceeds will help defray camp and other Scouting expenses.

The Groves welcomes
retired Herald editor

Jim Hannah, retired editor of the Herald, a denominational monthly magazine of Community of Christ Church, speaks on the theme “Take Time to Listen”  for services Sunday at The Groves, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence.
Hannah currently works in connection with Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Jackson County.
Lillian Jacobs, Lois Jones and Charles Kincaid assist in the 9:30 a.m. service in the Secret Garden. In the 10:15 a.m. service, in the Community Room, Lois and Irvin Jones, Charles Kincaid, Tom Peterson and Brenda Williams assist. Pianist Lois Moore and vocalist Cindy Kincaid will bring music ministry for each service.

Speaker’s theme to be
‘Take time to listen’

Dennis Sharier will be speaking on the theme of “Take Time to Listen” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.
Sharier’s has taught a variety of  Temple School classes. Most of his teaching is centered on preparation for priesthood.
Floyd Fears will be presiding. Music will be provided by Barbara Fears at the organ, with special music Karen Troeh. Others participating in the service are Bob Wilson, Gladys Binger, Bob Wilson and Ed Dowell.

Rev. Malkmus and
the Hallelujah Diet

The Rev. George Malkmus will deliver a message of health from a biblical perspective, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Gathering Place Conference Center, 2820 Missouri 291 Frontage Road, Independence.
Malkmus, a Baptist preacher for more than 30 years, combines the personal testimonial of his own recovery from colon cancer, with his research in nutrition and biblical teachings to develop a strong case for a vegetarian diet composed primarily of raw foods. He teaches God created our bodies to be self-healing, and healing works best when we give our bodies nutrition in the form of raw foods as God intended.
The Hallelujah Diet is a ration of 85 percent raw and 15 percent cooked food each day, with the cooked food usually coming only at the end of the evening meal.
Foods to avoid: Beverages (includes alcohol, coffee, tea, cocoa, soft drinks); dairy; canned and sweetened fruit and non-organic dried fruit; grains (refined, bleached flour products, cold breakfast cereal, white rice); meat; all roasted and/or salted seeds and nuts; oils (lard, margarine, shortenings and things containing hydrogenated oils); seasonings (refined table salt, black pepper and seasonings containing them); soups; sweets; and all canned vegetables with added preservatives or vegetables fried in oil.

Renaissance comes to Cornerstone Church
Cornerstone Community of Christ will be hosting “Cinderella’s Ball,” in conjunction with the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, July 23 and 24. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the church is located at 1316 S. Osage St., Independence.
Come feast with the King and Queen and help the Prince find his bride. The evening will include a six course meal, two hours of enchanting entertainment and a complimentary ticket to the 2010 Kansas City Renaissance Festival.
Tickets are $20 per person. Proceeds will go to local community outreach projects provided by Cornerstone. To purchase tickets, call 913-721-2110.

Bazaar and craft sale to be next weekend
A bizarre bazaar and garage/craft sale to benefit the Christmas Store of the Lutheran Urban Ministry Association, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 24 at Ascension Lutheran Church Family Life Center, 4900 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City.
New items include handmade quilts, purses, jewelry and other hand-crafted items. There will also be antiques, heirlooms, jewelry, household items, small furniture, toys, books and more. Bring one book and get two, or just make a purchase.

Event for youth
includes live concert

Youth Shaeach 2010 – Shout Unto the Lord will be held July 29 through Aug. 1.
The event kicks off from 8 to 10 p.m. July 29 at Blue Springs Rolladium Sk8 Center, 513 S.W. Keystone Drive ($5 admission includes skate rental,)
The event continues with a Shabach-A-Thon at 8 p.m. July 30 at Faith Tabernacle Church, 2121 Sterling Ave., Independence, with a back to school drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 31 at MGM Thrift Store, 3425 S. Noland Road, Independence, and concludes with an 11 a.m. service Aug. 1 at Faith Tabernacle Church.

Southern gospel to
visit area churches

“Final Authority,” a southern gospel quartet, will be in concert at 6 p.m. July 24 at the First Baptist Church of Buckner, 131 S. Hudson.
A fellowship will follow the concert.

Church offers free
clothing exchange

Beacon Heights Community of Christ will hold a free clothing exchange for children grades K-12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 31 at the church, 19402 E. Holke Road (next to BVAC), Independence.
Bring your outgrown, clean children’s school clothing (all sizes) to exchange for clothes (you pick out) that will fit your children for the coming year.
