Summit Grove sets
free clothing exchange
Summit Grove Community of Christ is hosting a free clothing exchange from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, 411 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence.
Clean, gently used clothing for all ages, infants to adults, is being offered to the community at no cost. Families are welcome to bring clothing suitable for exchange, but it is not required. Everyone is welcome.

school supplies
Good Shepherd Christian Church collected 256 school supply items for Community Service League in less that one month. The congregation continues to volunteer in the community through its outreach programs.
First UMC continues
175th anniversary
The public is invited an ice cream social from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 400 W. Maple Ave., Independence.
The church with celebrate its 175th anniversary with live music, games and a moonwalk.
The Rev. Harold Johnson of Lee’s Summit, who was the pastor of the church from 1985 to 1990, will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. combined worship service on Sunday.
Because of the heat wave, the ice cream social and live music will be held in fellowship hall, but the games and moon walk will be on the east lawn of the church.
Financial Peace
University offered
Two area churches will hold Financial Peace University, a Biblically based accountability curriculum that teaches smart money-making decisions.

Sugar Creek UMC
sets ice cream social
Sugar Creek United Methodist Church will hold its annual ice cream social from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at the church, 415 N. Sterling Ave.
The $4 cost includes a large serving of homemade ice cream, along with cake, coffee or iced tea. Carry-out is available.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
St. John LaLande
holds 5K walk/run
The registration deadline for the St. John LaLande’s 5K walk/run is Sunday. The race will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 21.

Youth to give update
on summer events
Immediately following the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church, the youth who attended the Triennium will be holding a “Triennium Stockholder’s Meeting and Dessert.” The stockholders will be learning about the time the youth and sponsors spent on the trip through pictures and stories. Desserts will be served.
Instead of an ice cream social, the Chapel Fellowship will be washing windows at the church on Saturday in preparation for the installation of its new pastor, Rev. Andrew Joseph Florio. Heartland Presbytery, the Session and the congregation of Chapel Hill will host the installation service, which is scheduled for 4 p.m., Aug. 15. A reception will follow in the kitchen area. This event is open to the public.

Church of the Rock
to distribute food
Church on the Rock Outreach Center in Lee’s Summit has several activities planned.
It will hold two Love’s Outreach Community Food Distributions. The first will be from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the church, and the second will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Cass County Fairgrounds, 308 W. Commercial, Pleasant Hill. There will be free food for families in need.
Children’s Blessing and Backpack Sunday will be held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 15. Every family attending will be blessed, and backpacks will be given out to school age children (elementary-high school). Quantities are limited and reservations required. Attendance during the morning service is also required, and children receiving backpacks must be present. Call the church for reservations.
Grandparents Sunday will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 5. There will be a special gift for every grandparent in attendance that day.

‘Put Faith into Action’
Blue Springs resident and author Richard Brown will speak on the theme “Put Faith into Action” at the Colonial Hills Community of Christ in Blue Springs during the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday. He will also lead the 9:15 adult church school class, using his recent book “What Was Paul Thinking?” Brown is a retired editor of the denomination’s monthly magazine, the Herald. He worked there and at Herald Publishing House for 23 years. From 2003 to 2007, he served as pastor of the Colonial Hills congregation.
Bishop Larry Norris of Community of Christ Church headquarters will speak on the theme “Put Faith into Action” during worship services at The Groves in Independence.
Co-pastor Christina Nagel presides at 9:30 a.m. in the Secret Garden, with Collene Ellis, Ada McDole and Alice Swanson assisting. Co-pastor Tom Peterson presides at the 10:15 a.m. Community Room service, with Earnest and LaDora Ledsworth, and Alice Swanson assisting. Pianist Susan Naylor and Shelley Ruhlman, vocal soloist minister in music at both services.
Jeanne Rider and Marcia Pugh will speak on “Put Faith into Action” at the 10:20 a.m. worship and communion service at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.
Bob Wilson will preside over the service. John Davis will play the organ and Mary Buxbaum will provide the ministry of music. Others participating in the service are Mark Xayaphet, Fred Clark, Matt Copeland, Rozanne Dowell and Ed Dowell.
The 2010 Stone Church Summer Series started at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 1. This is the second of four services. Don Compier, dean of the Community of Christ Seminary, will speak on the theme “Unity in Diversity.” Jeff Naylor will preside over the service. Special music will be provided by Amy Jeffers, Paula Glaser, Karen Cross, Ben Kelley, Greg Testerman and Liahona Mendelsohn. Phyllis Gregg will play the piano. Others participating in the service are Karen Cross and Doug White.
