The First Christian Church of Independence will hold a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Fellowship Hall of the church, 125 S. Pleasant St. The cost is $3.50 for coffee, juice, sausage and all-you-can-eat pancakes.

‘Do Not Fear’ is theme
of weekend sermons
Terry Snapp will speak on the theme “Do Not Fear” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service this Sunday at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.
Snapp is the presiding pastor of the Stone Church congregation. Eric Scott will preside, with special music by Dale and Jan Jones and Kristopher Taylor. Others participating in the service are Doris Tousley, Henry Volskay, Gerald Winship, Larry Crozier and Duane Qualls.

• High Priest Jim Everett speaks on the theme “Do Not Fear” at 9:15 and 10:15 a.m. communion services this Sunday at The Groves Community of Christ Congregation, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence.
Everett, a retired CIA intelligence officer, is author of the recently published book, “The Making and Breaking of an American Spy.” Brenda Allen will provide music for both services. Others assisting are Dawn Clavey, Carol Vincent, Jean Pement and Ada McDole.

at St. Cyril’s Church
St. Cyril’s Catholic Church will host a celebration of the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius on July 7 at the church, 11231 Chicago Ave., Sugar Creek.
A Latin Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m., followed by barbecue and polka dancing on the church grounds. Entertainment will be provided by the Sugar Creek Tamburitzans.
Donations will help fund several necessary church repairs. For more information, call the church at 816-252-9564.

for annual ‘Messiah’
Auditions are coming up soon, as Handel’s “Messiah” will once again be performed in Independence on Dec. 8 at the Community of Christ Stone Church, 1012 Lexington Ave.
Auditions are 7 to 9 p.m. July 17, 18 and 19, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21.
The origination of “Messiah” in Independence began in the Stone Church building in 1916.
The choir will consist of 100 singers and eight soloists and will be under the direction of Alice Bebee. The accompaniment for the event includes John Davies and Amy Cannon on the Stone Church organ and a string and brass ensemble. The audience will also participate in many of the numbers.

God and country
celebration planned
Blue Springs Assembly will be holding a God and country celebration at 6:30 p.m. July 20 at the church, 2501 N.E. Duncan Road.
This free event will feature guitarist Ron Mitchell. He is a veteran of radio, television, recording and personal appearances, and has performed and ministered in camps, fairs, churches and auditoriums across the Midwest. He has also been a band director for “The Gospel Echoes” and “The Bethelairs,” two locally acclaimed gospel groups.
A free meal will be served to those who place their name on a reservation list prior to July 13.

Unity Temple plans
two musical events
Two events will be held Thursday at Unity Temple on The Plaza, 707 W. 47th St., Kansas City. Encounter with Tim Freke will be at 7 p.m., followed by HuDost in concert at 8:30 p.m., featuring Moksha Sommer and Jemal Wade Hines.
Tim Freke, from Glastonbury, England, will debut his new book, “The Mystery Experience.” HuDost is a blend of exotic traditional Sufi chants, world folk music and powerful electric guitar licks.
