Big game means it’s time for big concert
In her first year as principal organist and director of music for the Community of Christ, Jan Kraybill began a tradition of free Super Bowl Sunday concerts.
Super Bowl Sunday Recital XI will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Community of Christ Temple, River Boulevard and Walnut Street, Independence.
This free concert is designed especially for children, youth and the young at heart. Groups that include at least one person under the age of 20 will have opportunity for a guided organ tour, with an up-close look at the pipes and console of the Temple’s magnificent Casavant organ, following her performance.

New regional choir forming at Unity
The Rev. Sheryl Myers, the minister at Unity of the Heartland in Olathe, is forming an area wide Unity choir.
Pianist and vocalist Graeme Cruickshank will be the accompanist and fellow co-creator. Rehearsals begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the Silent Unity Chapel at Unity Village, 1901 N.W. Blue Parkway.



Baha’i to hold meeting for political prisoners
The Bahá’í faith community of Independence will hold a special prayer meeting Saturday evening. The meeting will focus on seven Iranian Bahá’í leaders who have been imprisoned for almost two years and are to go to trial Sunday.
The imprisoned Bahá’í leaders are Fariba Kamalabadi, Jamaloddin Khanjani, Afif Naeimi, Saeid Rezaie, Mahvash Sabet, Behrouz Tavakkoli and Vahid Tizfahm. Bahá’ís the world over are praying for them and that they will be acquitted.
The Bahá'í faith community of Kansas City is also hosting a special prayer meeting at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Bahá’í Faith Center, 6515 Independence Ave., Kansas City. The phone number at the Bahá’í Center is 816-231-5010, and the phone number for the Bahá’ís in Independence is 816-350-3608.



Ham-and-bean dinner
St. Paul United Methodist Church will hold its annual ham-and-bean dinner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, 3601 S. Sterling Ave., Independence.
For a free will offering, enjoy ham and beans, corn bread, drink and dessert.


Ministerial Alliance to celebrate seniors
The Independence Ministerial Alliance will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at The Fountains at Greenbriar, 2100 Swope Drive, Independence.
This month’s topic is “Senior Resources in the Community”. The meeting will focus on the elderly in our community; both the special gifts they offer to us and how the faith community can help address needs particular to their stage of life. Presentations will be offered by Vicki Hon from the Palmer Center in Independence and Iris Miller from the Shepherd Center of Raytown. Lunch will follow the formal meeting.

Kennedy accepts call
Shauna A. Kennedy of Blue Springs has accepted a mission call from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After training at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, she is to be sent to the Panama City mission for 18 months.


Chocolate Festival
The First Presbyterian Church is holding its second annual Chocolate Festival from 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Hall, 417 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.
A free will offering gains you entry and a taster’s plate. The event also features a Children’s Craft Corner, a chocolate fountain, silent auction and a sales room.


Local resident to talk about work in Kenya
Kayla Bronder will be home in Independence to share a report on her mission in Kenya at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence.
Since October, Bronder has been volunteering in rural Karungu with the Catholic Medical Missions Board. She will offer an update on the Parasite Eradication Campaign she has designed for the local government and hospital.

Dramatic Truth School at Woods Chapel UMC
A free performance by Dramatic Truth School of the Arts will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at Woods Chapel United Methodist Church, 4725 N.E. Lakewood Way, Lee’s Summit. This is the last performance of this season’s concert series. For more information, call the church at 816-795-8848.


Summit Grove breakfast
Summit Grove Community of Christ will be holding a community breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at the church, 411 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence.
The menu includes biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash brown potatoes, oatmeal, juice and coffee. The cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children under 4.


St. Matthew UMC helping worldwide
St. Matthew United Methodist Church women’s unit is busy putting together health kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief. The group is also making prayer shawls and baby blankets for World Assembly to be distributed to those in need.
The group meets at 7 p.m. the last Monday of each month. The church is at 2415 R.D. Mize Road, Independence.
Church school is 9:30 a.m. Sundays, followed by church service at 10:45 a.m.


‘Called to Go Deeper’ at Groves this Sunday
Blake Roberson is speaking on the theme “Called to Go Deeper” for communion services this Sunday at The Groves congregation of Community of Christ.
Roberson, president of Independence Board of Education, is a State Farm Insurance agent and a minister in the Community of Christ. Music ministry will be given by pianist Janelle Brooner and vocalist Shelley Ruhlman. Assisting in the 9:30 a.m. Secret Garden service are Ada McDole, Ward Francis, Duane and Bonnie Harrington and Lillian Jacobs. Presiding for the 10:15 a.m. Community Room service is Co-Pastor Christina Nagel with Co-Pastor Tom Peterson and Associate Pastor Brenda Williams assisting.
