Cans of soup gathered for local food shelves
“Souper Sunday” reaches its conclusion this Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, 400 W. Maple Ave., Independence.
Since mid-January members of the congregation have been bringing cans of soup for the Community Services League and The Salvation Army. A goal of 500 cans was established by the missions/evangelism committee, chaired by Susan Wopata. The goals is more than twice the 243 cans collected last year.
“Souper Sunday” was established by the church about six years ago to coincide with the championship Super Bowl football game played on the same date.
The Rev. Mitchell Jarvis is the lead pastor, and the Rev. Donice Heriford is the associate pastor at First UMC.


Presbyterian  church carrying out food drive
Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church will collect soup and money to celebrate “Souper Bowl of Caring” Sunday. The items collected will be given to Community Services League site in Blue Springs and the NorthEastminister Food Pantry.            
Scout Sunday is also this Sunday with both Boy and Girl Scout troops joining in the 10:30 a.m. worship service.
The senior and middle high youth will meet at 5 p.m. Sunday evening for a Super Bowl party at the Roberts’. There will be a taco bar, and each is asked to bring a dessert or snack to share. Feel free to bring a friend and please call for reservations.
On Wednesday the Christian Nurture Ministry Unit will host an evening of fellowship and entertainment. A light dinner will be served in the kitchen beginning at 5:45 p.m., with a free will offering collected. At 6:30 p.m., they will move to the church school area for dessert and a show. Members of the congregation are invited to share songs, poetry, drama, dance and other creative gifts with the group. Tables will be set up for display of photography, woodwork, painting, fabric arts and more.
On Feb. 13 the Sacred Circle for Women will meet in Stone Hall from 8 to 9:30 a.m. This time offers a quiet place for reflection and spiritual growth. February’s theme is “Opening the Door.” Contact Cynthia Ogletree, Susan Letizia or Marilyn Dryer for further information.

David Brown to speak at Stone Church
David Brown will speak on the theme “Called to Go Deeper” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service this Sunday at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence. Brown is a counselor to the presiding bishop at the World Headquarters.
Arthur Butler will be presiding. The music will be provided by Junia Braby at the organ, and Kristi Atwood will provide the ministry of music.

Church on the Rock planning events
Church on the Rock Outreach Center in Lee’s Summit is sponsoring several events in February.
“Love’s Outreach Community Food Distributions” will be held 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Outreach Center, 1700 S.W. Market St., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Feb. 27 at the Cass County Fairgrounds, 308 W. Commercial, Pleasant Hill. There will be free food for families in need.
“Love Your Neighbor Sunday” will be celebrated Feb. 14 with a special Valentine’s Day illustrated sermon at 10:30 a.m. at the Outreach Center.

Free weddings, renewal of vows at Unity Temple
Unity Temple on the Plaza is offering its annual “Valentine’s Day Celebration of Love” with free weddings, holy unions and vow renewals from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 14.
Each couple will have 15 minutes to say their “I do’s.” A minister, chapel, recorded music and nuptials are all provided free of charge. Couples who wish to bring their own minister or musicians are encouraged to do so, at their own expense. For weddings, the couple need only bring a Missouri wedding license and come dressed for the ceremony.
Couples must register in advance in person between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday before Feb. 12 at the Unity Temple, 707 W. 47th St., Kansas City.
