Speaks Family Legacy Chapels in Independence will sponsor three “Special Day of Remembrance” Services this holiday season. The services are designed to provide a way for those who have lost a loved one to remember them in a very meaningful way and to assist those individuals in the healing process.

The first will be held Sunday at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 West Lexington Ave., and the second and third Dec. 15 and 16, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. All three services will begin at 2 p.m.

“The loss of a loved one is bittersweet, especially during the holiday season. It is a happy time that calls up sweet memories of those we love, but can also be a sad and empty time without them,” stated David Speaks, Remembrance program chairman. “Speaks Chapels have been sponsoring two services for each of the past several years.  The last two years we have had capacity attendance, so we are adding a third service this year to give more people this special opportunity to honor their departed family members and friends.”

Harold Ivan Smith, a noted educator, author and grief counselor, will be this year’s featured speaker.  His coping with loss message will be both meaningful and memorable to all attendees, young and old. Smith will be joined by David Speaks and other members of the Speaks Chapel staff in presenting these inspirational programs.

All three services will be identical. In each service, all attendees will be asked to participate in a candle lighting ceremony, as well as to bring an ornament that personally represents their loved one and place it on a special Christmas tree in their memory. Refreshment will follow the service.

All three services are free and open to the public. Anyone that has suffered a loss is invited to attend, whether Speaks Chapel served the family or not. Because of capacity attendance at previous Remembrance Services, reservations are required. Call 816-252-7900 for reservations.
