Church puts focus on those in need
St. Paul United Methodist Church in Independence will collect toilet paper to place on the altar during the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday and the 4:30 p.m. Christmas Eve service.
The church has been focusing on doing more for those in need and decreasing spending on Christmas gifts. It invites the community to give back in the spirit of Christmas.

‘Rejoice’ is theme for end of Advent
For the fourth Advent Sunday, Evangelist Ron Yager speaks on the theme “Rejoice” at the 9:15 and 10:15 a.m. services at The Groves Community of Christ Congregation, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence.
Music ministry is provided by Scott and Lea Spiers accompanied by pianist Christina Nagel. Others assisting in the services are Geoff Henshaw, Dean and Karen Moreland and Irvin Jones. Evangelist Yager and his wife, Elder Delavena Yager, will conduct a special prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room. All are welcome.
• Don H. Compier will speak on the theme “Rejoice” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service Sunday at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.
Compier, the dean of the Community of Christ Seminary, a part of the Independence campus of Graceland University, received his Ph.D. in theological studies from Emory University in Atlanta. For nine years he served as professor of theology at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, the Episcopal seminary of the Graduate Theological Union, an ecumenical consortium in Berkeley, Calif.
Eric Scott will preside. Others participating in the service are Jeanne Chase, Barbara Fears, Dennis and Amy Sharier, Ray and Katie McClaran, and Linda Keller. Special music is provided by John Davies, Kyle Stephens, the Stone Church Choir, and Paulette Votava Resch.

Puppet Nativity at St. Peter’s UCC
St. Peter’s United Church of Christ will present a Puppet Nativity at 4 p.m. Monday, 700 E. 110th St., Kansas City.
The Christmas story performance features larger-than-life wise men, each with three church members inside to move the puppet figure and his arms. A Christmas Eve candlelight service, including communion, will also be held at 11 p.m.
