at Waldo Avenue
All are invited to hear Peter Loth, a Holocaust survivor and author, speak at 5 p.m. Saturday at Waldo Avenue Restoration Branch, (Center Point Restoration School) 819 W. Waldo Ave., Independence. He was born in a Nazi concentration camp, lived in communist Poland following the war, and then came to the United States, where he experienced hatred and racism in the early 1960s. His story is one of pain, love and forgiveness.

garage sales ends
Fifty years in the same location, the First Presbyterian Church has been holding its annual rummage sale this past week, with the final day of the sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Westminster Hall, Pleasant and Lexington, Independence. Saturday is Sack Day, which means everything that can be stuffed into a grocery sack is just $1. Proceeds are used for the week-long LOGOS Senior High Conference in Estes Park, Colo.

St. Ann’s fish
dinners in October
St. Ann’s is having fish dinners” from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. each Friday in October at the church at the corner of Cedar and Lexington in Independence.
The menu includes boiled and fried shrimp, whole channel catfish, catfish fillets, chipotle tilapia, panko tilapia, grilled-cheese sandwich, macaroni/cheese, french fries, boiled potatoes, coleslaw, vegetable, hush puppies and corn bread. Drinks are included with dinner, and desserts will be sold separately by the Altar Society. Dinner prices range from $8.50 to $9.75. A fish sandwich and fries is also available for $4. dancers Sunday
Liturgical hula dancers will be a major part of the service at both the 9 and 11:15 a.m. worship services this Sunday at the Independence First United Methodist Church, 400 W. Maple Ave.
The dancers are a part of the church’s observance of World Community Sunday, and according to the Rev. Mitchell Jarvis, they will dance to traditional Samoan Tongan praise music. Rev. Jarvis’ sermon will be “Trust and Stewardship.”

Blessing of animals
at Trinity Episcopal
Trinity Episcopal Church will honor St. Francis of Assisi Sunday with a blessing of the animals ceremony at 1 p.m. in Trinity’s gardens, next to the church at White Oak and Liberty Street, Independence. Everyone is welcome to bring a pet to have a special blessing. There will be a reception following for all pets and their families.

Revival planned
at Calvary Baptist
Calvary Baptist Church in Blue Springs will hold revival services Sunday through Wednesday at the church, 900 N.W. 22nd St. The event begins with a 10:45 a.m. service on Sunday and continues each evening at 7 p.m.
Evangelist and Bible teacher Richard Green will lead the revival. Special music groups will be featured at each service. There will also be a special devotional service Monday through Wednesday beginning at noon.

Blessings’ is theme
Bethany Lloyd will speak on the theme “Receive God’s Blessings” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service this Sunday at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.

Oakland United Methodist Church, 30701 E. Truman Road in Buckner, will hold its annual Lord’s Acre Sale Oct. 13.

Walk for hunger
is coming up
Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Blue Springs will have a group walking in the CROP walk on Oct. 14. The CROP walk, which fights hunger, has been a tradition at Chapel Hill for many years. At the 10:30 a.m. worship service that day, the youth will help to collect a noisy offering to benefit the CROP walk.
The Chapel Hill Kids will sing with the adult choir at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday.
The pantry will give to Hope House in October. Items needed are toilet paper, pillows, bath towels, women’s deodorant, hair brushes, nail clippers, adult cough syrup (day or night and alcohol-free), tampons (super/super plus), and Wal-Mart or Target gift cards for purchasing needed items.
