Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, advocate for global nuclear disarmament, will receive the 19th Community of Christ International Peace Award at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Community of Christ Temple, 201 S. River Blvd., Independence.
He served three terms as mayor of Hiroshima. At the same time, he was president of Mayors for Peace and grew the organization from 470 member cities in 1999 to 4,402 by 2010. He is a professor by special appointment of Hiroshima University and serves as national chair for AFS Intercultural Programs in Japan.
