Community of Christ president to speak

Community of Christ President Stephen Veazey will present his annual address to Community of Christ at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Community of Christ Temple, River Boulevard and Walnut Street, Independence.

His address will be supported by music presented by the Spire Symphonic Chorus, a large community chorus combined with the Spire Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Ben A. Spalding, founder and conductor.

A free will offering will be taken.


Sermon series on ‘Taming the Tongue’

“Taming the Tongue” is the subject of sermons for the remainder of April at the Independence First United Methodist Church, 400 W. Maple Ave.

The Rev. Mitchell Jarvis will preach at both the 9 and 11:15 a.m. worship services this Sunday and April 22, and youth minister Bryson Lillie will preach April 29.


Revival at River Boulevard Baptist

River Boulevard Baptist Church will hold a revival at 11 a.m. April 29, and at 7 p.m. April 30 through May 2 at the church, 3212 N. River Blvd., Independence. It features evangelist Rev. Darrell Douglas, with Dr. Cameron Smith as worship leader. For more information, call 816-461-5650.


Eastgate Christian installs new pastor

Eastgate Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, will have an installation into ministry service at 10:25 a.m. Sunday for the Rev. Joshua Patty as its senior minister.

Rev. Patty received his A.B. degree from Wabash College and his master of divinity degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. He served as youth minister at the United Christian Church in Country Club Hills, Ill., and was ordained in the Illinois/Wisconsin Region. He came to Eastgate from the Central Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Fairmont, W.Va., in December.

The Rev. Dr. Katheryn Graham, regional minister for the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, of the Kansas City region, will conduct the installation service. Rev. Dr. Paul Diehl, regional minister-president for the region, ministerial colleagues, family and friends of Rev. Patty, will also be present for the celebration.


‘Courageous’ – movie with message of faith

The movie “Courageous,” with stories of faith and hope, will be shown at 6 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 131 S. Hudson, Buckner. It’s free, and everyone is welcome. Free child care provided. For more information, call 816-650-5632.


Kennedy gets ready for two-year mission

Sean A. Kennedy of Blue Springs has accepted a mission call for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will enter the Missionary Training Center on May 23 in Provo, Utah, and then be sent to the Spokane (Wash.) Mission for two years.

Lutheran women gather at Timothy

“Make My Joy Complete,” based on Phil. 2:1-5, is the theme for the Kansas City South Lutheran Women’s Missionary League’s Zone Rally, which will be held April 21 at Timothy Lutheran Church, 425 N.W. R.D. Mize Road, Blue Springs. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the opening devotion beginning at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $5.

Each society will share how it provides encouragement, comfort, fellowship, tenderness and compassion. The ingathering is sunscreen, insect repellent and small flashlights for an urban ministry summer camp, as well as canned and packaged food for the Lutheran Urban Mission food pantry.

First Church of God sets family trivia night

The First Church of God will hold a family trivia night at 7 p.m. April 20 at the church, 220 E. Elm, Independence. There will be snacks and prizes will be awarded. All ages welcome.

Group ‘Eternity Focus’ performs at Eastpoint

Eastpoint Family Church is sponsoring a musical group, “Eternity Focus,” at 10:30 a.m. April 22. The church is at 3923 Pittman Road, Kansas City. The event is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.


Blue Springs church helping Hope House

Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Blue Springs is collecting groceries and toiletries for Hope House this month. Items needed are toilet paper, paper towels, bath towels, deodorant, feminine pads-heavy, women’s socks, women’s underwear (all sizes), and gift cards to Walmart, Target, etc.

On April 25 at 6 p.m. a night coffeehouse is planned. Members and friends are encouraged to share their talents and enjoy seeing others share their talents with all of us. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by dessert and the talent show. Contact Wendy Schoen, Traci Dryer or Michelle Jones to include your name and talent for the show.

Members are encouraged to go on April 28 to the workday at Heartland Presbyterian Camp. Those wanting to carpool will leave the parking lot at the church at 8 a.m. in order to arrive at 9 a.m. This is a great way to have fun and fellowship while working for a good cause.

Financial Peace University offered

Stone Church Community of Christ will hold Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University beginning at 3 p.m. April 22, at the church, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.

St. Robert Bellarmine plant sale scheduled

St. Robert Bellarmine Church will sell flowers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 28, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 29, inside the office doors at the west end of the building, 4313 S. Missouri 7, Blue Springs.

There will be bedding plants, annuals, hanging baskets, herbs, patio pots and tomato plants. Proceeds will go to their Sister Community of Cinquera, El Salvador.


Blue Springs Assembly holds women’s rally

Blue Springs Assembly Women will host its spring women’s rally, “Passion 2012,” beginning at 7 p.m. April 27 at Blue Springs Assembly, 2501 N.E. Duncan Road. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., so participants are invited to drop in early for free appetizers and shopping at the BSA Boutique.

The evening includes games, giveaways and a time of praise and worship. The after-rally activities include a mini mani, Zumba, mug with a friend for Glamour Shots ($2 person) and more.

Motorcyclists to aid child abuse group

Open Arms Community of Christ congregation’s Peace Riders motorcycle ministry is hosting a fundraiser April 28 to benefit the Child Abuse Prevention Association. Biker registration begins at 11 a.m. at the church, 1101 W. Walnut St. in Independence. The registration fee for the 50-mile ride, which will begin at 3 p.m., is $5 per person.

Free activities for all ages will run from noon until 3 p.m. Non-bikers are welcome! Visit information, motorcycle-related, and craft vendor booths throughout the event. The evening kicks off with a pig roast picnic at 5:30 p.m. (free will donation for CAPA) followed by a coffeehouse and fellowship with live bands from 6 to 8 p.m.

Grain Valley church plans garage sale

Faith United Methodist Church in Grain Valley will hold its annual garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28.

All purchases will be by donation only; there will be no prices on any of the items for sale. All of the money raised will be used for mission trips and mission projects. Items include furniture, clothes, appliances, children’s toys, kitchen supplies, tools and books.

Resurrection sermon series on parables

“Stories That Change the World: The Parables of Jesus” is a sermon series that begins this weekend at Resurrection Blue Springs, one of the four campuses of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, based in Leawood.

This Sunday’s sermon is “Making Life Count,” followed by “The Relentless Love of God” (April 22), “The Necessity of Forgiveness (April 29), “The Essence of Goodness” (May 13) and “Exercises in Missing the Point” (May 20). (There is a guest speaker, Daniel Mhone, of Malawi, on May 6.)
