The announcement of “get out your calendars” brings a smile to the women of our family. The men, on the other hand, shake their heads in disbelief that we’re actually going to add another family event to an already overcrowded schedule.

We’re a family of planners and if it goes on the calendar, it’s going to happen. We even have planning dates to plan an event. With two babies on the way and a wedding next summer, our calendars are getting a real workout.

There’s only one problem with family planning – two of us want to be in charge – and we all know too many cooks in the kitchen will spoil the broth. I don’t know why I fight it, because in the end my sister is always going to have the last say.

My youngest daughter’s baby shower is this month, and after our first planning session I headed for the craft store and purchased items for the centerpieces and decorative ribbon. In the back of my mind, I must have known my items would be rejected, as I held onto the receipt, until we gathered again to put it all together. Sure enough, it wasn’t quite right, and as polite as she could be, my sister put everything back in the sack to be returned.

It’s a boy, and with his dad being a year-round hunter, the theme for the shower will revolve around being in the woods. Apparently she didn’t think the blue and green flowers I bought were going to blend well with the sticks and cattails she had gathered.

I was still sulking a little bit about not being in charge of the centerpieces when my daughter and her husband asked me to go with them to a 3D sonogram of the baby. Sonograms have come a long way since I was having kids. Not only is it in color, but you could see him perfectly. His little hands and feet were moving constantly, and when the technician zoomed in on his face, he looked perfectly content, and he’s a mirror image of his daddy. Worrying about the centerpieces seems pretty trivial now, as I stare at the photo I was given of my grandson. He’s coming whether we have blue and green flowers or cattails, and I can’t wait to hold him.

The other grandbaby isn’t due until January, so I announced, “get out your calendars” and choose a date for this shower. My grand plan will be to purchase more items in advance than my sister does.

Of course, I’ll keep the receipts.
