What better way to extend the celebration of America’s independence than with a family outing southeast of town to Missouri’s premier botanical gardens? With a full slate of attractions and activities planned for Saturday and Sunday, Powell Gardens offers plenty of entertainment for those planning a staycation this holiday weekend.
A leisurely drive down U.S. 50 through countryside delivers visitors to the 915 acre display of native plants, contemporary architecture, and unique exhibits. Operated as a private, non-profit garden, the serene setting has long inspired budding botanists and dedicated dirt worshipers with its spectacular landscapes and varied terrain. Far from simply a place to admire skillful garden design, Powell Gardens provides endless educational programs intended to arm local gardeners with the knowledge and ability to create their own backyard havens.
The gardens’ annual “Booms and Blooms” festival commences at 9 a.m. Saturday with self-guided tours of the site’s many gardens. A mild and moist season has benefitted many of the displays, bringing lushness to the grounds. Daylilies are expected to be at their peak for the weekend merriment, and a variety of the show-stopping stems will be available for purchase.
Throughout the day crafts and recreations for children will be in abundance, keeping the younger set amply amused. Humid conditions and warm temperatures will no doubt make the Fountain Gardens all the more appealing. The newest addition to Powell Gardens, the cut stonework and changing water patterns make for fine viewing as little ones enjoy splashing in the shallow basin.
Beginning at 4:30 p.m. musical entertainment will be provided by Coleen Cassidy, followed by a performance by the Lee’s Summit Symphony Orchestra at 7:30. Capping off the evening will be a dazzling fireworks show renowned as among the most exhilarating in the area. Situated far from the city lights, Powell Gardens is ideally positioned for unforgettable pyrotechnics.
The fun continues on Sunday with a performance by the Spirit of Independence Concert Band from 2 to 4 p.m. Fresh off its performance Saturday evening at Independence’s Mormon Visitors Center, the ensemble will entertain the crowd with patriotic tunes.
Through November Powell Gardens will exhibit contemporary African stone sculpture procured from the collection of the Chapungu Sculpture Park of Zimbabwe, Africa. More than 40 pieces are positioned around the property, showcasing the work of three generations or artists, primarily from the Shona tribe.
Admission to the “Booms and Blooms” festival is priced at $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $3 for children aged 5 to 12. Members of Powell Gardens receive free year-round admission for all activities and events.
