Blue Springs, MO —

I painted my bathroom green, and it looks terrible. I don’t know why I did it.

Yes, I do. We had some handicapped rails installed for Kelsey. When we patched the walls, I decided it was time for a change.

I am pretty boring when it comes to paint. The bathroom walls were white. I thought I would warm the room up with some fresh paint.

Every spring, my mom painted the nonpapered walls of our home. She painted the walls the same white color year after year.

However, I thought I would break away from the family tradition of white walls and give the bathroom a new green coat. As a result, my bathroom is now a cotton candy green. I have never seen this color of green before. It’s like a fluorescent green.

This is really not my fault. Do you know how many greens are out there?

There is army green, lime green, mint green, sage, olive, hunter, emerald, teal, bright green, Kelly green, and even, asparagus green. Of course, I choose my green paint from a half-inch picture on a brochure with 40 options for green paint.

Add to it, the paint cost a small fortune, because it was a primer and paint, all rolled into one can. Oh my, what am I going to do, now?

I asked the kids what they thought of the fresh new bathroom.

Kelsey’s response was, as she walked into the bathroom, “Wow, mom, are we going to the circus today?”

Josh said to get rid of it. Jeremy said, “I’m awake now.”

It does sort of look feminine, and I should have known the boys wouldn’t like it.

Regardless, the bathroom walls are green, a green I have never seen ... ever. Maybe the light in the paint store is not the same as my bathroom light.

I asked Julie, a friend and decorator, what I should do. She suggested filling it with white things and “it will soften the color.” She was right.

Another friend suggested replacing the bathroom lights with the new “eco” bulbs. She said the bathroom would lighten up and most assuredly, it would change the hue.

I couldn’t. I was too fearful of making a change, in case the bulbs made the color look worse.

The boys gave me some suggestions. First they said to get 3-D glasses for the family. Then, they offered to close their eyes while they showered. For their third suggestion, they told me to paint yellow and red polka dots, so the room would look like a traffic light.

I was getting a little irritated by their ideas. Besides that, I was beginning to like the color.

When the boys recommended I unplug all the night lights because “the green bathroom kept them up all night,” I had it.

I told them I was keeping the green walls, because I liked my bright new bathroom.

“In fact, sons,” I told them, “I may just paint the whole house the same color, because I’ve decided to  ...

Go green!”
