Kyana Mason will be a sophomore at William Chrisman High School this fall and is a member of the school’s softball and track and field teams. She is organizing a backpack and school supply drive to help Independence students in need. Bins will be placed outside Hy-Vee in Independence as well as the Hidden Valley and Legacy sports complexes July 12 to 15 to collect supplies, hygiene products and backpacks. T-shirts will also be sold to raise additional funds to purchase any other supplies that are needed.
Why did you decide to start this school supply collection drive?
“A lot of kids in our schools don’t have the things that they need. This is a way to help them and give back to the community. I felt like I needed to give back.”
How does it make you feel to organize a community service project like this?
“It feels good. I am actually helping somebody and setting an example for my little brothers and cousins. I am the oldest, and I want them to give back to the community. I can’t expect them to do it if I am not willing to do it myself.”
How can the community help?
“We will have collection bins around town in July. Monetary donations can be sent to Bears Tomorrow, 19049 E. Valleyview Parkway, Suite C, Independence, Mo. 64055 (This is a 501(c)(3) organization that helps future athletes of William Chrisman). The money that we collect we will use for things such as flashdrives or items we don’t receive.”
Should more teenagers get involved in giving back to the community?
“Yes. Anything we do can help someone who is need.”
