Who’s helping whom: The Grain Valley community has rallied around the Grain Valley Assistance Council, which provides food and school supplies to those in need.

Where: The Assistance Council is open Wednesdays at the First Baptist Church,  207 W. Walnut.

The need: Last week, case manager Mary Strack said supplies of food where the lowest she’d seen in her 16 years on the job. “It’s just gone,” she said. In July, the group served 83 families – including 10 new families – and gave out more than 4,000 food items. In addition, about 180 children were helped with school supplies.

The response: “Our community is coming through,” Strack said.

The Grain Valley Chamber of Commerce and others got the word out last week about the need. Almost 1,000 items came in – 200 from First Baptist, other churches kicked in about 300, and almost 500 came by way of the chamber’s monthly luncheon.

“The churches have been wonderful,” Strack said. “The whole community really amazes me.”

Next up: The city’s Parks and Recreation Department will have the annual “See the Need” barrels out at various businesses, collecting more food.

How can I help? Strack can be reached at the Assistance Council’s office at 816-355-0328. She’s there on Wednesdays.
