Savanna Johnson, a 14-year-old freshman at Truman High School, is a living example of community mindfulness.

A senior Girl Scout in Troop 1144 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, she is currently working on a service project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.

As part of her service project, she is directing a horseshoe tournament at Don Harris Arena, Ruth Stocksdale Park in Liberty, on July 7 from 9 a.m. to about 12:30 p.m. Money raised will be given to the Ronald McDonald House charity in Kansas City.

There are about 40 pitchers signed up, and they range from 8 years old to 80.

Pitching for the past six years, Savanna is currently listed as number 1 in the Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Association in the Girls Division with a ringer percentage of 26.25 percent. She has earned both the Bronze and Silver Awards in Girl Scouting and is on her way to Gold.

What made you join Girl Scouts, and is it what you thought it would be?
I actually started Girl Scouts in kindergarten, which was 10 years ago, so I don’t really remember what I thought of it. But my parents said that they told me about it, and I really wanted to join. But despite what I don’t remember, I always have loved Girl Scouts. My troop has done so many fun things, and I have accomplished so much. I have already earned the Bronze and Silver Awards, and now I am working on my Gold!

Can you tell us about your upcoming project?
Right now I am starting my Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. This award requires lots of planning, funding, and taking action. I am going to be buying storage shelves for Ronald McDonald House Charities in Kansas City, and organizing and cleaning their storage space. In order to pay for these shelves, I am holding a horseshoe benefit tournament.

How important is volunteering to you?
Volunteering is so important to me. Without it, a lot of the good things our city (and other cities as well) puts forth would be nothing. Volunteering is important because you can make the world better, and feel good about yourself at the same time.

Do you plan to volunteer more in your life? If so, in what way?
Of course I plan to volunteer! I love volunteering all the time! I plan to help out with whatever my church needs help with, with whatever my community needs, anything. I love it!

Why should people volunteer in their community?
People should volunteer to make their world a more fun, exciting, healthy and joyful place to live. When you volunteer you are helping somebody or something, and that will make things better, and it will also make you feel good!
