This is the second consecutive year that a team of teachers from Brittany Hill Middle School in Blue Springs will be participating in Relay for Life.
Nine teachers, named “Wasko’s Warriors,” will be walking in this year’s event in memory of a former teacher, Debbie Wasko, who lost her battle with cancer two years ago. To raise money, the nine teachers, led by Catherine Owen, are planning the Shopping for Survival fundraiser. During the event, community members have the opportunity to shop at various vendors, with all proceeds going to the Relay for Life team. Last year, $600 was raised.
Why is this an important event for you to participate in?
This event is important to every single one of us here because we all respected and cherished Debbie. Throughout her battle with cancer, we never saw Debbie without a smile on her face. She was an inspiration to us all as she made the most of each day. We never heard her complain, we never saw her angry or sad. We were all blessed to have said we knew her. She made an impact daily on her colleagues and every student she saw in class. She also has two amazing daughters, who many of us here were privileged enough to have in class. Through her fight, she kept her family unit strong and she and her husband raised two beautiful and respectful daughters.
What do you hope to gain from the experience?
What we would like to gain from this experience is, if even just once a year, to come together to celebrate her life. Also, cancer has touched all of our lives in some form or another as we watch family members, friends, current and former students battle this deadly disease. ACS (American Cancer Society) is a great organization working toward a great cause of creating more birthdays for more people.
What is Shopping for Survival?
We have numerous vendors who have volunteered to donate some of their time and some of their profits to our Relay for Life team. The event will take place April 26 in the Brittany Hill Middle School Media Center. This year, our goal is to raise at least $1,000.
Why have you decided to reach out to the community in this way?
We feel that the American Cancer Society is a great organization trying to raise money for cancer research. When we first heard about the Relay for Life event, we thought it would be a fun way to spend some time together as we don’t get to see some of our former colleagues and raise money for a great cause. We think that the Shopping for Survival event is a fun way to do some birthday shopping, Mother’s Day shopping, early Christmas shopping, all while supporting a great cause.
