What’s the employee turnout like at these events? Normally we have pretty good crowds.

Hy-Vee does other volunteer efforts, too, right? It’s a very, very community-oriented company. We work here, live here.

What’s the thing people most commonly say when they take part in the cleanup? Honestly? That was easy. ... With so many of us, it goes fast. She said some of the volunteers – the young men in particular – sometimes make a contest of it. They kind of compete to see who gets the most.

What do you think of the city of Independence’s Declaration for Independence program?  I think it helps people verbalize that they are already thinking and feeling.

What others say:

“It was really good to get involved. If even some people get involved, it’ll make a difference.”
Allison Mulhall, Blue Springs, cashier at the store at Noland Road and U.S. 40

“I have the best job in the whole store. I have the best job in the world. ... We do a lot of weddings, a lot of business (events). ... Weddings are the most fun for me.”

The purpose of Declaration for Independence is to inspire those in the community to take action to make the city a better place to live. City officials are asking community members to Declare for Independence. Visit www.indepmo.org and click on the Declaration for Independence tab.
