Tinker, Tailor, Soldier – Winner

Take a seat, relax, pay close attention and have a good time with “Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy,” the adaptation of John le Carre’s British spy novel. It moves a bit slowly, but there’s enough going to build suspense and keep the audience – at least those of us who haven’t read the books – guessing more or less until the end.

Mostly, this is worth watching for the solid cast, including Gary Oldman, Mark Strong (good to see him getting better roles), Colin Firth, Tom Hardy and the surprising Benedict Cumberbatch (also on screens at the moment in “War Horse”). Actors say they love playing the bad guys, and in a spy caper half of the trick is figuring out who the bad guys are. Of course, the Brits are on the right side of the Cold War but still the characters at the center of this story are not quite black hats – mostly – but they’re not very pleasant people either. There are enough shadows and shades of gray to make the characters interesting and make everyone a suspect.
