The Great Backyard Bird Count is being held Friday through Monday.
The Wild Bird Center, an Independence store selling bird-related items, says everyone – expert or amateur – is invited to help out. You can tally up species in your area for as little as 15 minutes. Go to www.birdsource.org/gbbc to get started.
The count yields a lot of data, helping experts get a handle on such issues as how weather influences bird populations, the timing of migrations, bird population diversity, how diseases such as West Nile virus are affecting different regions, and the status of species that appear in large numbers in some winters but not others.
