Two seniors from Van Horn High School have been honored by the Rotary Club of Independence as students of the month.

• Melissa Contreras has received the McCoy Award for academic excellence. She is active in cheerleading, Student Council and National Honor Society. She works outside of school and is doing volunteer service at an elementary school.

She plans to attend Missouri State University in Springfield, majoring in nursing with a minor in business.

She is the daughter of Macario and Olga Contreras.

• Jose Enamorado also received the McCoy Award for academic excellence. An athlete, he has earned four medals in track and the Golden Boot award in soccer, as well as being named to the all-district team.

He has played soccer all four years and track for one year. He also is active in Scholar Bowl and is Student Council treasurer and a part of MPI.

Outside of school, he plays piano for his church and is in the church's community outreach. He also had played soccer for various teams.

He plans to attend the University of Missouri in Kansas City to complete his basic credits, then transfer to the University of Missouri in Columbia to complete a veterinary degree. He would like to become a zoological vet at the Kansas City Zoo.

He is the son of Norma Barrios and Jose Enamorado.
