The Blue Springs School District says no one was injured Thursday when a school bus caught fire and was heavily damaged.

The Central Jackson County Fire Protection District is investigating and so far is calling the fire suspicious.

It happened between 2:30 p.m. and 3 in the Cumberland Falls neighborhood. The bus was about at the end of the afternoon route. Assistant Chief Eddie Saffell of the CJC said the driver smelled smoke and got the approximately five high school age students aboard off the bus. The fire appeared to have started in the passenger portion of the bus.

“The interior of the bus is pretty much destroyed,” Saffell said.
