Three seniors from Van Horn and Truman high schools have been honored by the Rotary Club of Independence as students of the month.
• Dominick Conkling has received the JCLC award, a scholastic excellence medal, a Cadet of the Month ribbon and certificate, and a certificate for presenting the colors in support of Veterans Day.
He has been active in the JROTC Raider team, the JROTC drill team and the Interact Club. Outside of school he has worked for Midwest Pool Management.
He plans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps and then join a police force.
He is the son of Christy and Dan Conkling.
• Beth Presler is a member of National Honor Society, the National Arts Honor Society, and the National Society of High School Scholars. She was accepted to symphonic orchestra, all-district string orchestra and the 2015 Missouri academic all-state volleyball team. She has received academic and music letters, 1 ratings at state music solo and ensemble contests, and has been a district track qualifier. She also was honorable mention as a middle hitter on the suburban all-conference volleyball team. She was a delegate for the Youth Summit on the Environment in Washington, D.C.
She has participated in chamber orchestra, varsity volleyball, track and field, pit orchestra for "Oklahoma," the NAHS treasurer, Spanish Club and the Gateway selection committee.
Outside of school she volunteers at Great Plains Animal Shelter and for Special Olympics. She plays competitive volleyball for her church youth group and plays special music for church and nursing homes.
She plans to major in biology with a double major in music and visual arts and hopes to be able to contribute to conservation efforts and wildlife rehabilitation programs.
She is the daughter of Rex and Rhonda Presler.
• Antonyo Byrd is active in Youth Entrepreneurs, DECA, and varsity football and track. Outside of school he has participated in Coterie Theatre's Playwright program, Roundtable and ATA taekwondo.
He plans to attend Washington University in St. Louis to study international business. He wants someday to own a property development.
He is the son of Antonyo Byrd and Cynthia Byrd.
