Kansas City police have identified the two victims of a fatal car crash Friday morning in northeast Kansas City as two brothers whom the Independence School District confirmed attended Korte Elementary.

Brian Moyer, 10, and Dustin Moyer, 6, were pronounced dead at the scene after the accident at 12th and Ewing, which occurred about 11:35 a.m. Friday. They had been in a car that smashed into a wooden utility pole and landed in a nearby front yard on 12th Street.

According to police, the car had apparently been involved in a minor accident with an SUV a short distance away. Police said the drivers were going to exchange information, but the driver of the car sped away and soon lost control and crashed.

The adult male driver, the boys' father, and an adult female passenger, were taken to a local hospital in serious condition. According to police, none of the car's occupants had used a seat belt, and there were no child safety restraints in the vehicle.

A spokesperson for the Independence School District said extra counselors are available at Korte Elementary for students and staff in need. Family and friends of the Moyer brothers held a ceremonial balloon release Sunday at Sugar Creek's Kaw Field.
