The Torgerson family was named “Family of the Year” by Putting Families First at Tuesday evening's ceremony in Blue Springs. Amy Torgerson is a single mother to Paul, Alex and Alice and is a fifth grade teacher who recently was diagnosed with leukemia.

“I know she is a good mom because of the way she treats us as her students,” the Turgersons' nominator said. “We can feel we can trust her with everything and anything. She says we are her cubs and she is our mama bear, and we think that, too. In addition to taking care of her school family, she cares for her children and supports them in their school and extra activities. She's a great lady!”

Other families nominated this year: Bradshaw, Dodgen, Gales, Fears, Ginther, Gooch, Goring, Hansen, Kintz, Martin, Merrill, Myers, Sargent, Stephenson, Summers, Watson and Wheeling.

Jackson County Family Week is April 23-29.
