The Mid-Continent Public Library is offering its Food for Fines program from Monday through May 7.
Each donated food item counts as $1, up to a limit of $10, toward library fines.
There are guidelines. The library is looking for boxed meals, canned food, peanut butter, cereal and pasta. Items cannot be expired, damaged, open or non-nutritious. No glass, plastic or cardboard drink containers.
Mid-Continent has 31 locations, and last spring this event brought in more than 12,000 donations.
Donations at the two Blue Springs branches, the North Independence branch and the Midwest Genealogy Center go to the Community Services League, donations at the South Independence branch go to Lunch Partners, donations at the Grain Valley branch go to the Grain Valley Assistance, and donations at the Buckner branch go to the LINC Fort Osage food pantry.
