A fire scare from a tractor-trailer led emergency officials to shut down a portion of Interstate 70 overnight and early Wednesday morning.
After 1 a.m., Central Jackson County Fire Protection District personnel responded to a call reporting a trailer on fire on eastbound I-70, and the trailer was carrying explosive material. By the time emergency personnel arrived, the truck driver had pulled over to the shoulder just east of Woods Chapel Road, unhitched the trailer and pulled safely away, CJC assistant chief Eddie Saffel said.
The fire was determined to be overheated brakes in the trailer and was limited to that area. The explosive cargo was not affected by any fire, but emergency personnel had closed eastbound I-70 at Little Blue Parkway as a precaution. They had the fire extinguished at about 1:30 a.m. and reopened I-70 a few minutes later.
