Two seniors from Van Horn High School have been honored by the Rotary Club of Independence as students of the month.

• Edwin Orona was a finalist in an art competition, was student of the month, and received a STEM award for computer science. He was active in JROTC his freshman and sophomore years, was a Youth Entrepreneur, and took part in an outdoor soccer league.

He has enlisted into the U.S. Army military police with a five-year commitment. He plans to take online classes at the University of Central Missouri while in the military.

His parents are Erika Bautista and Gustavo Orona.

 

• Destany Williamson was in the JROTC Batallion, color guard, drill team, and was flag detail commander. She was STEM student of the year, STEM and PSA Academy ambassador, and a member of National Honor Society.

She also participated in Scholar Bowl, the ISD Academy ambassador, and was Van Horn theater stage manager. Outside of school she worked at Worlds of Fun and is a sound technician for her church.

She plans to attend Iowa State University to study metals materials engineering. She also plans to join the Air National Guard.

Her parents are Luke and Jodie Williamson.
