A woman apparently escaped serious injury when her umbrella was struck by lightning Wednesday night in Independence.

Independence police were called at 8:59 p.m. about a lightning striking a woman at the Hawthorne Place Apartments complex on the 600 block of North Peck Street. The police said they dispatched an ambulance and the Independence Fire Department to the scene.

A spokesman for the Independence Fire Department said when they arrived on the scene, that medics from AMR ambulance service were treating the woman and the firefighters were sent away. The IFD spokesman said the injuries did not appear to be serious and a spokesman for AMR said no one was transported to a hospital at that time.
