For 36 years, Alana “Nana” Dennis had a dream.
This summer, that dream became a reality as the longtime food service veteran opened her own restaurant in Blue Springs.
Nana’s Cafe 2650 S. Missouri 7, is dedicated to local farmers, farm-to-table organic meals that feature the best ingredients Davis can find in Eastern Jackson County.
• Nana’s Café’s ground beef and chicken are both organic and grass fed and hormone and antibiotic free.
• The turkey bacon is uncured and smoked and also hormone and antibiotic free.
• The turkey and chicken sausage is hormone and antibiotic free.
• Produce is purchased from Terra Health and local farmers.
• While the kitchen is not gluten free, it is gluten conscious.
“This is a dream come true,” said Dennis, who has worked in a managerial position for Taco Bell, Sonic, Shoney’s and Subway. “We believe in local and organic and can’t wait to see how we do.
“So far, we’re happy with the success we’ve had and we expect to get busier once people find out about Nana’s Café.”
Nana’s success has seen a normal day jump from an average of 80 to 90 customers to a high of 177 on a recent Sunday.
All her dishes come from family recipes; are cooked from scratch with the best local ingredients and tender, loving care.
Nana’s Café is open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday and is closed on Saturday.
“I need a day to spend with my family,” said Dennis, the mother of two grown sons, Dustin and Jesse. “And we wanted to be open on Sunday so those people going to church would have someplace to have a nice meal after their church service.”
When an organic diet helped her mother, Mary Thurber, survive Stage 4 cancer, Dennis knew she was going to open a restaurant that featured the best – and tastiest of local organic fare.
And now, she’s done it.
“It took a while to make this dream come true,” she said. “I believe in faith, family and country, in that order. God has blessed me with this opportunity. I couldn’t have done it alone. I have so many wonderful members of my family to thank for being with me on this journey.
“We have been working on this for a year and a half, and it is my life story and my family’s life. We are so pleased to be here to serve the Blue Springs area.”
