An Independence man who worked Truman Medical Center-Lakewood has been charged with sex offenses last month against patient in long-term care.

Luis Soliz, 49, was charged Saturday by Jackson County prosecutors with first-degree sodomy and sexual misconduct. He was fired by TMC-Lakewood following the alleged incident.

According a court documents, a nursing assistant walked into a patient's room on July 28 and saw Soliz performing a sex act on a patient who is unable to speak and has limited use of her arms and legs. The nursing assistant left the room in shock, returned to positively identify Soliz, saw him masturbating and said she would be reporting him.

The nursing assistant then informed the charge nurse what she saw, and when the charge nurse found Soliz, he said, “It's true. I've had this problem for awhile,” before the charge nurse could ask any questions.

The next day, investigators used a presumptive test for bodily fluids and received positive reactions on the victim's pillow case, throw pillow and bed headboard. Results from lab analysis of those items, a sexual assault examination of the victim and swab from Soliz are pending.

Prosecutors requested a bond of $75,000 cash.
