The murder trial for John Seger, which had been scheduled for next week in Jackson County Circuit Court, has been rescheduled until March 26, 2018.
Seger is charged with second-degree murder in the July 2013 stabbing death of Corey Laykovich near the victim's home in Independence. Seger's public defender has another case next week, causing the case to be postponed until the next available date in March.
According to court documents, Seger told police that Laykovich was stabbed after the two crossed paths in the early hours of July 27, 2013, got into a heated argument and began to scuffle. Seger said he fled the scene and threw the knife in the woods and claimed the stabbing had not been malicious. Laykovich staggered home, collapsed in his bedroom and was pronounced dead the next day in the hospital.
