A felony theft Sunday afternoon in Independence eventually led to manhunt and then a barricade situation in Blue Springs, with five suspects in custody.

Independence police received the call at Shop and Pawn at the 12800 block of East U.S. 40 shortly after 4 p.m., and a citizen who saw the crime and called 911 followed the suspect vehicle until officers could get to the area. The vehicle went east on I-70 into Blue Springs, where officers caught up to it in the Wal-Mart parking lot near Adams Dairy Parkway.

According to police, the suspects began to exit the vehicle but then fled an officer's attempted car stop them. The ensuing pursuit went into a cul-de-sac at Sni-A-Bar and Willow drives, just south of U.S. 40 in western Grain Valley, where four suspects bailed from the vehicle and the driver again left the area. The officer lost the speeding vehicle shortly thereafter, but Blue Springs soon found the car and driver.

Police called in a K-9 unit to assist, Blue Springs police found one of the suspects who bailed in the Grain Valley cul-de-sac and later found the other three suspects in a nearby cul-de-sac in eastern Blue Springs. Police then, as one of the suspects was known to be armed, kept them surrounded until all three were taken into custody before 8 p.m.

All five suspects were taken into Independence police custody, pending further investigation.
